Panel Discussion Bridging Access to Services for Canadian Crypto Companies

Every successful business needs access to important financial and professional services like banking and insurance, but in the case of the cryptocurrency industry, misperceptions of high risk have left many companies struggling to obtain bank accounts, credit, and liability and cybersecurity insurance. Collaboration between the crypto sector and these service providers is key to a safe and thriving industry, which takes education, open dialogues, and the co-development of solutions tailored for the industry’s needs. Join an expert panel from Canada’s blockchain ecosystem to discover why these services are so essential, strategies for effective communication, and how successfully bridging this gap will lead to opportunities for beneficial economic growth.

Moderator:
Michael Rabkin, Global Head of Business Development, DVChain

Panel Discussion Navigating Global Changes in Crypto Regulations

For years, the ability of authorities to regulate the crypto sector has been outpaced by technological advances, the growth of digital businesses, and mass adoption by hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Catalyzed by increasing TradFi integration and concerns about consumer protection, 2022 and 2023 have seen a major increase in new regulations and proposals from governments like Canada, the US, and EU – but managing risks while supporting valuable innovation has been a difficult balance. This panel brings together diverse experts across law and fintech to discuss the impact of new regulations like MiCA and Canada’s updated CSA requirements, the potential effect of a US crypto crackdown, and ways to support effective government and crypto collaboration.

Moderator:
Matt Burgoyne, Partner, Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP
Speakers:
Janine Moir, Partner, National Digital Assurance Leader, Business Assurance, Deloitte
Tanim Rasul, Chief Operating Officer, NDAX
Sam Gabor, Counsel, Gowling WLG

11:45 AM – 1:15 PM

Lunch Break

1:15 PM – 2:00 PM

Panel Discussion The Next Halving Will Transform Bitcoin Mining

Approximately every four years, the Bitcoin network undergoes a major change that has historically led to big moves in the coin’s market value – and forces the mining sector to quickly adapt to a much more challenging market. Predicted for the spring of 2024, the next halving will reduce block rewards by 50% and increase the scarcity of mineable Bitcoin, and according to many analysts, could rapidly accelerate the crypto’s entry into a new bull market. This panel will bring together mining and crypto executives to explore the impact predicted by the next halving on BTC’s price trajectory and ways companies are preparing to meet the challenge of increased mining difficulty.

Moderator:
Ben Harper, Associate Director, Luxor Technologies
Speakers:
Emma Todd, President, MMH Data Systems
Jason Budgell, Chief Financial Officer , BlockLAB
Sue Ennis, VP of Corporate Development, Hut 8
Simon Raven, Chief Executive Officer, Raven Energy Solutions

2:00 PM – 2:45 PM

Panel Discussion Navigating the Liquid Staking Landscape: Legal and Industry Perspectives

This panel will focus on the rapidly expanding arena of Liquid Staking, with special emphasis on Lido, one of its most prominent platforms. Liquid staking has garnered significant attention over the past year for its innovative approach to asset staking, namely by allowing participants to stake their cryptocurrency assets while simultaneously offering liquidity. These capabilities have addressed key limitations seen in traditional staking models, primarily the issue of asset illiquidity. Our discussion will engage industry leaders in exploring the practical, legal and regulatory landscape impacting liquid staking. The panel aims to identify the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, focusing on the general legal frameworks applicable to this emerging financial mechanism.

Moderator:
Kirk Emery, Partner, Miller Thomson LLP.
Speakers:
Laure Fouin, Partner, Co-Chair, Digital Assets and Blockchain, Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP
Dean Skurka, Chief Executive Officer and President, WonderFi
Didier Lavalee, CEO, Tetra Trust Compant
Mark Greenberg, Managing Director, Canada & Global Staking, Kraken Digital Asset Exchange

3:30 PM – 4:15 PM

Panel Regulations and the Next Evolution of Stablecoins

In 2023, the global market cap for stablecoins reached 12% of the entire cryptocurrency sector, with accelerating adoption by governments, traditional finance, and as a payments solution for individuals. However, unclear regulations in many jurisdictions and concerns about how much the stability of this asset class can be trusted are giving these useful digital assets a less than certain future. What makes stablecoins so important to the digital economy – and how can consumers best identify safe projects, build successful use cases, and understand regulatory trends? This panel brings together legal and financial experts to give their perspective on these stablecoin questions and more.
